What is a Cupola? According to "Your Dictionary
Online":
cu'-po-la, noun,
Architecture
1) A vaulted roof or ceiling.
2) A small dome set on a circular or polygonal base or resting on
pillars.
3) A domelike structure surmounting a roof or dome, often used as a
lookout or to admit light and air.
Cupola comes from the Latin meaning "cupo" or "little dome", referring
originally to the small domes on church roofs which allowed air and light to
enter. More recently we have become familiar with the beautiful copper-topped
cupolas on European and American homes, barns and stables.
Nearly all cupolas
are constructed of wood (or, more recently, Vinyl), with copper or shingle roofs
and have either windows or louvers - a beautiful and classy addition to any
structure
